Biografia

Nacido y educado en Puerto Rico, José G. Matos Malavé se gradúa del Recinto de Ciencias Médicas de la Universidad de Puerto Rico con un grado de Doctor en Medicina en 1977; concluyendo su residencia en oftalmología en 1981.

Primer cirujano en Puerto Rico en realizar los procedimientos de corrección visual Queratotomía Radial (RK), junio 1985; Epikeratophakia, abril 1986; Keratoplastía Lamelar Automizada (ALK), diciembre 1996; Queratectomía Fotorefractiva (PRK), marzo 1996; Queratomielusis Insitu (LASIK), abril 1996; Queratomielusis Epitelial (LASEK), 2001; Keratoplastia Conductiva (CK), abril 2002 y Custom LASIK en febrero 2003.

Actualmente utiliza el único sistema de láser con radar de alta velocidad aprobado por la FDA; conocido como LADAR Vision 4000. Originalmente desarrollada para la NASA, este sistema posee la capacidad de seguir los movimientos del ojo hasta 4,000 veces por segundo. En febrero de 2003 se incorpora al LADARVision el nuevo y revolucionario sistema de diagnóstico y corrección conocido como LADARWAVE; diseñado para medir y duplicar las características particulares de la córnea de cada paciente.

Destacado en la práctica privada, se desempeña también como Jefe de Oftalmología del Hospital del Maestro, como Director Médico del Centro Oftálmico Horus, primer Centro Educativo y de Cirugía para la Corrección Visual con Láser de Puerto Rico. Dr. Matos Malavé ha colaborado en investigaciones, ha desarrollado técnicas e instrumentos para varias compañias oftálmicas, formó parte del grupo de investigadores de CRS-USA Lasik Study, grupo que recopila data de un selecto número de cirujanos para la Administración de Drogas y Alimentos, FDA de los Estados Unidos.

Como parte del genuino compromiso con su profesión, Dr. Matos Malavé se mantiene activo dictando conferencias en prestigiosos simposios alrededor del mundo. Un verdadero pionero en su campo, Dr. Matos Malavé ha honrado su profesión con veintidós años en la práctica privada, dieciocho de los cuales ha dedicado al estudio, investigación y ejecución de la cirugía de corrección visual.
